TL;DR: from 9 December 2026 your design records can decide a liability case
Germany published its new Product Liability Act on 27 October 2026; it applies to products placed on the market from 9 December 2026. Under the EU directive behind it, software and digital manufacturing files such as 3D printing files are products. Courts can order the defendant to disclose relevant evidence, with protection for trade secrets, and a failure to disclose leads to a presumption of defect. Germany's 85 million euro liability cap and 500 euro deductible are gone. Claims can be brought for up to 10 years after a product is placed on the market, 25 years for latent personal injury. For Inventor teams the practical job is clear: know your role, keep dated design and release records, and be able to find them years later.
Dated proof of every released design.
BORIS for Autodesk Inventor registers your CAD files from inside Inventor and gives each registered version a blockchain timestamp and a certificate of ownership, so you can show which design existed, and when.
